Oral, dental and maxillofacial surgery, by definition, is a tumor that consists of both the soft tissues in the mouth, including the cheeks, palate, tongue, muscles and lips, as well as the teeth and jaw bones that make up the hard tissues. It is the branch of science that includes the treatment of pathological formations in the form of cysts, tooth and jaw fractures, the removal or maintenance of decayed or buried teeth, and the corrections made in a way suitable for prosthesis construction. In our country, those who graduate from the faculty of dentistry receive the title of dentist. In order to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, they must receive specialized training in the department of oral, dental and maxillofacial diseases and surgery. Those who receive specialized training in this branch of science are given the title of specialist physician. Oral, dental and maxillofacial surgery deals with surgical procedures for diseases of the oral cavity, teeth, jaw bones and facial tissues. Dentists can refer their patients to oral and maxillofacial surgeons when necessary.

Although local anesthesia is sufficient for intraoral surgical procedures, general anesthesia may be required for extensive surgical procedures in the mouth, jaw and face. In addition, the fear of tooth extraction, known as dental phobia, reflex-related nausea, pediatric patients, mental or physical patients, and patients who cannot be treated with local anesthesia require intervention with general anesthesia or sedation.
